—– | Saturday – Lampedusa Arrival by plane in Lampedusa. From Italy, there are usually flights available from Bergamo, Bologna, Malpensa, Linate, Rimini, Verona and Rome airports. Lampedusa is the widest/most extended of the Pelagie archipelago – from the Greek “pelàghia”: islands of the high sea. On arrival, transfer to the port and boarding El Safir or the Boreas of Katharina. The islands are a piece of Africa at the centre of the Mediterranean; Lampedusa, charming and attractive, with rugged coastlines and picturesque coves, emerges from the waters at a parallel of 35°, nearer to the Tunisian coast than the Italian coast. The appearance of the landscape, the vegetation, the seabed that diminishes in depth towards Africa, the rich marine fauna with a multitude of species, including those with a tropical appearance and the particularly mild climate for a very long period of the year, make these islands exotic and unique in the Mediterranean. The sailing begins in the crystal clear waters of this African Sea: Lampedusa, and then beautiful Linosa, black with lava rock, the outline of its three mountains silhouetted against a bright blue sky; the volcanoes, now extinct, give the island a fairly sinister look… The only built-up area, characterized by pretty pastel-coloured buildings “outlined” along corners, doors and windows, gathered round a little marina. Bordered by rugged lava rocks, Linosa is a divers’ paradise and perfect for seawatching enthusiasts. Arriving at the Fili, you can see rocks that form a sort of closed natural swimming pool, connected to the shore by impressive rocky walls smoothed by atmospheric conditions. Past the Faraglioni, you can spot the lighthouse; and then Cala Pozzolana, the only beach on the island enclosed by a wall of incredible colours, from sulphur yellow to iron red. In the evening, under a starry sky or at the bar in the main lounge, it is highly enjoyable to talk about the adventures and discoveries of the day. Then, after a night navigation, we’ll be waking up in the spectacular inner bay of Dwejra. We’ll then be sailing south along the rocky west coast visiting the wonderful Xlendi Bay and Mgarr Ix-Xini, said to be one of the oldest ports, defended at the entrance by an old tower dating back to 1661. Heading then towards Comino, with its spectacular quarries and the blue Lagoon. For diving lovers, Malta offers many interesting sites, including a large number of wrecks from the Second World War. ————– |
